I use VSS at my company. Almost every time I start it up, it takes 5 or 6 minutes until it's actually usable. I double-click the icon on my desktop, and the splash screen appears after a few seconds. There's no window for it at first. Then, 5 or 6 minutes later, the VSS window finally appears. Sometimes, during those 5 or 6 minutes, I open up Process Explorer to see what VSS is doing. Whenever I check it, Process Explorer indicates that the process ssexp.exe is:

--NOT using the CPU
--NOT allocating more RAM (the size of its working set is not changing)
--NOT using the hard drive (the columns for I/O delta read bytes and I/O delta write bytes are blank)

So, what exactly is VSS doing for those 5 or 6 minutes? Is there any way to get it to start up faster?

Hi,

Please check the following things:

1. Please run the VSS Analyze utility to check if your VSS database is healthy.
2. How large is your VSS database? Large database could affect the performance. You may use archive & restore to transport some projects to other databases.
3. Which version of VSS are using? Would you please try upgrading your VSS to a higher version to see if it helps?

Thanks.

Thanks for your response, Catherine.

1. If I understand correctly, the VSS Analyze utility is something that has to be run on the VSS server. Is that right? I don't have access to the server myself, but I will ask my coworkers about this if necessary.
2. The database is about 20 MB. Would that be considered "large"?
3. I'm using the 2005 version. I guess 2008 is the latest version, so I'll try to upgrade to that soon.

You didn't answer my first question, though. What exactly is the process doing for those 5 or 6 minutes?

Are you using VSS remotely?

If yes, the cause of the problem is clear. VSS is very slow when used remotely.

SourceAnywhere for VSS is the right solution for you. :)

Thanks.
