VSS 6.0 - file cannot be found

Hi,

We are using VSS 6. Quite often we all get the issue whereby we open a document (VSS copy) but Word states "<the file> cannot be found. Check your spelling, or try a different path"

However, if you try the same file again, it will open up (though this may take a few tries)

Does anyone have any idea why source safe may not make the file available in the temp directory for word to open?

It seems that your VSS database is not healthy. Please analyze your database using the Analyze tool and try again.

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the advice on the Analyze tool. It looks as if the previous guy didn't use it.

It has now fixed many problems.

Unfortunately, the issue still persists.

In addition, the source safe clients do not seem to like keeping the working folder settings. It will often load up with No Working Folder.

Do you have any other advice on these issues?

Hi Sunil,

As I understand, the working folder info is written to the file

Quote:

{VSS database}\users\{current user}\ss.ini

when you close Visual SourceSafe.

If, for some reason (like you don't have write permission), the working folder info is not written to that file, the info will be lost the next time you log in.

Quote:

"<the file> cannot be found. Check your spelling, or try a different path"

For this error, you might also try upgrading your VSS to 2005 or install the latest patch from Microsoft.
