I'm trying to do a simple check out of a file in Visual Studio 2008, and I keep getting "Error checking out file(s)" Folder tree is out of date. Please refresh your folder tree."

What does that mean? I've done a Get Latest on the root of the project, on the folder and on the individual file item. I've clicked on every refresh button I could find, in the Source Control window, in the Pending Changes window and in the Solution Explorer. Nothing makes this "error" go away.

I finally got the file checked out in the standalone client and at least VS2008 is smart enough to know that the file is no longer read-only. But I had to manually refresh the Pending Actions window. It's like VS is out of sync with what's really been downloaded into my workspace. Everything is current, or at least it ought to be. Is there a cache that needs to be forcibly refreshed (or deleted)?

What kind of project are you using in Visual Studio?

We reproduced the error message on a website project, but the issue can be solved by refreshing the project tree in Source Control Explorer in Visual Studio.

If the issue can be reproduced, would you please let us know your steps? Also, you can try reopening Visual Studio to see if it helps.

C# project. Can't reproduce it, checking out the file in the standalone client worked, which made the problem go away, at least for now.

All I can tell you is that Get Latest worked correctly from the VS File menu, but not from the Source Control window. I would expect that doing a Get Latest would do the same thing no matter where it was invoked from. Refreshing the source control and pending actions window had no effect at all.
