When I am trying to checkout from visual studio 2005/VSS "None of the items in the selection are valid for this operation"
message is displayed and checkout wont happen

Any reasons?

Are the selected files under version control? Please note you can only check out files that are managed by a version control tool.

If they are, can you provide us the steps to reproduce the issue and the error message in the Output window of Visual Studio? To show the Output window, please click Visual Studio menu View->Output and select Source Control from the Show output from dropdown list.
