Hi, does anyone know how to extract the real filename of a \data file.

I have run Analyze.exe and i have a corrupt file called "\data\q\qpgbaaaa" and i would like to know what it contains, and where it is in the VSS Database Projects.

I have heard of a command line utility "SS physical $/ -r -ophysical.txt" which apparently lists the names of all files, but i don't understand how to use it - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can use SS physical $/ -r -ophysical.txt to display the physical file name associated with a logical file/folder from VSS database. To use the command, please follow these steps:

1.Go to the VSS folder with SS.EXE and run SS physical $/ -r -ophysical.txt in command line.
2.A file named with physical.txt will be generated in the folder.
3.Open the file, search qpgbaaaa and you can see the logical item it associated with at left side.

For more information, you can take a look at this article:

Thanks.

Thanks Catherine, i tried that and it did create a "physical.txt" file but it's only contents were :-

No items found under $/

I think the problem i have is that Visual Sourcesafe is not installed on the Server where the VSS DB is located. Is it possible to run this from my PC, but look at VSS DB on another machine ?.

Thanks for your advice.

Yes, you can run this command from your PC but look at the VSS DB on another machine by setting the environment variable SSDIR.

Each time you run ANALYZE, you should create a list of all items in the database. This list is useful in determining which logical file name is related to an error based on the file name (for example, Abcaaaaa.a) for which the error is reported.

1. On your desktop, right-click My Computer and then click Properties. In the System Properties dialog box, click Advanced, then Environment Variables.
2. Under User variables for <username>, click New.
3. In the New User Variable dialog box, in the Variable name box, type "Path".
4. In the Variable Value box, type "%PATH%;<Visual SourceSafe directory>", where Visual SourceSafe directory is the directory containing Visual SourceSafe program files, and then click OK.
5. In the New User Variable dialog box, in the Variable name box, type "SSDIR".
6. In the Variable Value box, enter \\servername\vss db path, which is the directory containing the Srcsafe.ini file for the database, for example, \\DYNAMSOFT-VSSDB\vssdb, and then click OK.
7. Run the command to create the physical list, at the command prompt, type: ss Physical $/ -R –O@PHYSICAL.TXT

Then you will get a mapping table between the file name in the error message and the logical file name.

Thanks.
