Oh man! Please help!

Our SourceSafe DB had been acting up lately so we decided to run an analyze on it to try to "fix" things up.

We ran: analyze.exe -b"backup folder" -c -d -db -dc -f -fl -fp -v4 "path to data folder"

After 6-7 hours, it finally completed (with errors and inconsistencies). However, if we open Visual SourceSafe Explorer, ALL our source code files are GONE! All the folders are there, just no files in those folders.

If we look at the Data folder on the hard disk, it appears we have all the SourceSafe files (in subfolders named A, B, C, ... Z, there are hundreds of files with incoherent names such as aabbaaaa.b). And, in the backup folder specified in the analyze arguments, we have hundreds of files (same kind of "weird" names), along with analyze.log, analyze.bad, and SharedList.log.

Anyway, what happened?! How can we get our source files back into Visual SourceSafe Explorer?

Thanks!

Hi,

Which version of VSS are you using? If you are using the old version, I recommend you analyze your VSS database again using Analyze Utility Version 8.0.

Hello Catherine. Thanks for your reply. We're using VSS 2005 (with Analyze v8.0). We'll try running it again to see what happens. Any other thoughts on what we can do?
Thanks!

Hello again...

I got the ss physical $/ -r -ophysical.txt utility to work, and I got a text file with all the mappings between our projects and the physical files. But, what do I do with it now? Or, is this just informational?

Also, I ran analyze again to see if that would help. The command was:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual SourceSafe\analyze.exe" -d -f -v3 "Z:\rnd\VSS6\DATA"

It said it found and fixed some items. However, I still can't see anything in SourceSafe Explorer. Again, the physical files all appear to be on the disk in the DATA folder, we just can't see (and do anything with them). It's like SourceSafe doesn't know how to translate/associate the physical files (again with the names like aabbbaa.a) and our actual source code, and then display anything in VSS Explorer.

Any other suggestions on how we can recover from this?

Thanks.

Hi,

Do you have a backup of your VSS database? If yes, I recommend you analyze your backup copy to see how it works.

Also, you can try renaming the Status.dat and Names.dat files and then analyze your database again.

Please keep me updated on this issue.

Hi again Catherine,

Well, fortunately, I was able to get a hold of a network backup, restored all the folders/files, renamed Status.dat and Names.dat (as you suggested), run analyze again, and everything worked! We've got our source code back!

I'm not sure what happened the first time I tried running analyze, but your advice about running analyze really seem to do the trick.

Thank you so much for the help!
