Does SourceAnywhere compress the files that it stores? If so, what kind of compression does it use? Thanks.

Hi mchevett,

SourceAnywhere for VSS is a remote access add-on tool for SourceSafe. It uses VSS database. Data is compressed before transferring with our solution.

If your question points to SourceAnywhere Standalone, which is designed as a replacement of SourceSafe, my answer will be "Yes" :D . We use ZIP compression before storing data in the database in SQL Server. Besides, we use delta storage. When a file is updated, only the differential part will be stored rather than generating a new full version.

Thanks.

Okay, thanks a lot.

So, in the case of a disaster, are we able to pull our files directly out of the database?

Hi mchevett,

You can only pull out the files using the client software. I recommend you back up your database regularly to avoid some unexpected accidents.

If you are using Visual SourceSafe, please check out the following articles:

Best Practices for Preventing Data Corruption

How to backup a VSS database

If you are using SourceAnywhere Standalone, you can use the backup tool of SQL Server to back up your SourceAnywhere database.

Thanks.
